Afraid of Outer Space

Afraid of Outer Space
by Valerie Parente

She says she’s afraid
of outer space
but everything she loves
exists in space
through the cosmos and the black
hurtles a place
that she calls home
perfectly made
a perfect planet
for an imperfect race
and all it takes is one doubt
to collapse all progress made
so instead she says she fears
the less familiar state
a void out there
of astronomical stakes.

Maybe what we’re scared of
isn’t the vastness of space
maybe what we’re really scared of
is coming face to face
with the reality that we’re all
floating through a blank slate
where anything could happen
but we get to dictate
how far we go
to make sense of this place
maybe it’s the vastness of the choices
that could be made
that scares us to death
when humans get a say.

Down here we have differences
down here we’re supposed to be safe
but we’re capable of making it dangerous
we’re capable of turning it into a hellscape.
Out there might be vast
but there’s no room for hate
we can only survive it
if we collaborate
working hand in hand
remembering we’re the same.
Out there hope and love
is what governs our fate.
Out there the only thing that matters
is humanity’s greatest strengths.

The Timing of The Stars

The Timing of The Stars by Valerie Parente

The light from a star has been conspiring
to make its way to you in due time;
traveling through the cosmos
to reach your eyes.

The constellations give you exactly what you need
at the perfectly right time;
whether you are ready or not
is just a state of mind.

Looking back on the past
everything always makes sense
so why not put your faith
in the future past, called present?

Internal Monologue

Internal Monologue by Valerie Parente

I am made of stardust and everything I believe in is written in constellations.
My entire world is comprised of traveling light that glows up the night.
And I am in awe of how the cosmos mirror my make-up.

I can hear the stars as voices in my head, an internal monologue that never ends.

Feel me breathe
and see me think
I am the language
the starlight speaks.

Trust the Stars

Trust the Stars by Valerie Parente

What is meant to be is already unfolding
Promises we send in space and time
Keep your faith through the darkness of night
And the right pathway will be realized.

Trust the stars
They know your heart.

Destiny is your relationship with the universe
The stars reflect the dust you are made of.
Guardian angels glowing down from above
Writing constellations in a language called love.

Trust the stars
Wherever you are.

The awe that you feel in today
Is not constrained to the starry sky
Whenever you forget about your stellar guide
Remember, you are made of the same light.

Trust the stars
They got you this far.
