Afraid of Outer Space

Afraid of Outer Space
by Valerie Parente

She says she’s afraid
of outer space
but everything she loves
exists in space
through the cosmos and the black
hurtles a place
that she calls home
perfectly made
a perfect planet
for an imperfect race
and all it takes is one doubt
to collapse all progress made
so instead she says she fears
the less familiar state
a void out there
of astronomical stakes.

Maybe what we’re scared of
isn’t the vastness of space
maybe what we’re really scared of
is coming face to face
with the reality that we’re all
floating through a blank slate
where anything could happen
but we get to dictate
how far we go
to make sense of this place
maybe it’s the vastness of the choices
that could be made
that scares us to death
when humans get a say.

Down here we have differences
down here we’re supposed to be safe
but we’re capable of making it dangerous
we’re capable of turning it into a hellscape.
Out there might be vast
but there’s no room for hate
we can only survive it
if we collaborate
working hand in hand
remembering we’re the same.
Out there hope and love
is what governs our fate.
Out there the only thing that matters
is humanity’s greatest strengths.

Light Pollution

Light Pollution by Valerie Parente

It’s not normal to be so bright
all of the time
and the more you force it
the less meaning you’ll find.
If you’re plagued by the artificial
you might as well be blind
because the light pollution
blocks out the natural skies
and there’s a reason we live
in a world that turns to night;
it is not to make you sad
it is meant to highlight
that you’re entitled to be somber
it is your natural right
but the stars can take it from here
so turn off the lights.
We don’t need all this pollution
and the push to be contrived
you don’t need to fake a smile
you are allowed to cry
that duality is night and day
and what it means to be alive.

The Vulnerability of Hope

The Vulnerability of Hope by Valerie Parente

To have hope is to be vulnerable
and open to disappointment.
When you are hopeless nothing can hurt you,
you’ve given up and everything is pointless.
It is better to be hopeful
despite the pain that will transpire
because the universe chose us for the human experience
and that is this life’s greatest honor.

Humanity

Humanity by Valerie Parente

To live is to feel
To feel is to emote
To emote is to communicate
To communicate is to connect
To connect is to love
And to love is to live.
Don’t waste your life
fighting your feelings.
