Blue Lips

Blue Lips by Valerie Parente

Something about the cold
and how it makes my lips blue.
Something about the frostbite
in being so crude.

I vowed to be explicit
in everything that I do.
I vowed to be so cold
to every man that swoons.

Don’t touch me,
I’m made of ice
and you’ll be frozen too.
Don’t touch me,
it’s my demise
from the fear I have groomed.

Yes, there’s something about the cold
and how it makes my lips blue.
Well at least when I’m cold
I’m the color of you.

I Still Dream of You

I Still Dream of You by Valerie Parente

I still dream of you
and I never get confused
because at the core of my consciousness
I realize you never really left.
When I see you in my dreams
everything feels like its true quality
and there is never a question
just a reoccurring remembrance
that I might have lost you in this life
but that loss didn’t reconfigure my mind
and within me, you are always present
within me, you rest in heaven.

Your Power

Your Power by Valerie Parente

Nothing is more violent
than being silenced
that’s why we use our words
every time it hurts.

Starbound

Starbound by Valerie Parente

Glitter on my eyes
I’m no longer hidden
put me on display
in all my resilience
I’m gonna be star
that much is imminent
watching from a space
that’s gradually shifting
from shame to grace
I shine and I glisten
lend me your hand
on this stellar mission.

If You Remember Anything, Remember This

If You Remember Anything, Remember This by Valerie Parente

The day that taught you
what true bravery was
the day that gave you
3,000 guardian angels above
the day that made you
feel the weight of all your love.

The day that lingering question,
what is the meaning of life?
had one prevalent answer,
and it was to love in your limited timeline.

Because in the midst of unimaginable horror
you saw consciousness in its greatest honor
to be capable of love and recognize it in another
to remember that this is all that matters.

Dorothy

Dorothy by Valerie Parente

Hide away
from a tornado
the very chaos
of my soul
wear my heart
like my clothes
tap you twice
bring me home
glitter in these steps
make the most
of this stardust
head to toe
I’ve been lost
like a plucked rose
so ruby red
all on my own
wind me down
a yellow brick road
’cause now I’m ready
for the rainbow.

In Love with a Nihilist

In Love with a Nihilist by Valerie Parente

It says less about you
and more about me
that when you say you’re a nihilist
I start to think in poetry
using rhyme and reason
to find reasons in the grand scheme
and you might not see your meaning
but how could that be?
Because when I conceptualize it all
there’s one concept I believe
that you’re in this world on purpose
and you mean the world to me.

Never Gone

Never Gone by Valerie Parente

I remember
when you were in front of my eyes
now you are
the reason behind
everything that I do
the brightest light
in my life
guiding me
through the darkest times.
