Every woman
is a witch
full of magic
she just needs to
realize it.

We have a sixth sense
called intuition.

We mix and match potions
so our skin glistens.

We are guided by empathy
when we make decisions.

We go through phases like the moon
and its positions.

We scare the men of the world
with our predictions.

We possess a heavenly portal
to create children.

We pass wisdom from mother to daughter
like it’s tradition.

And we do it with all our heart
and its conviction.

Kindred Spirits

Kindred Spirits by Valerie Parente

I’ve said this so many times
how I see figures in the middle of the night
flashing silhouettes with no face
but I see them and I’m never afraid.

I call the flickering ghosts my kindred spirits
something that should be scary but I don’t fear it
we are not unlike each other all that much
we mean no harm but scare the ones who love us.

I see myself in them, as strange as it seems
wanting to be seen, wanting to be believed
for the ways I misread my anxiety signals
a little broken brain with a flicker of wisdom.

Maybe I relate because I’m also like a ghost
bound to this home, and I don’t know how to let go
and every time I try to make myself get up and move
I come back to the same place, this same bedroom.

I believe in the kindred spirits I see
as do they believe in me
maybe they’re trying to say
believe in yourself all the same.

When I finally leave this room
I hope they come with me too
because they remind me there is more
than just material in this world.

I’m the monster
that my monsters are afraid of
because they wouldn’t be trying so hard to take me down
if they didn’t know what I’m capable of.
The truth is they believe in me
more than anyone else
so when I get paranoid and believe nothing is real
I can still believe in one thing, and that’s myself.

The dark entities in your mind
want to take you down to where the pain dwells
so if they’re gonna make a monster out of you
you might as well give them hell.

The Damsel & The Demon

There once was a Damsel named Daphne
and when she was just a girl
she started having intrusive thoughts
that drew her to the underworld.

There stood the kingdom of Nefaria
ruled by a soul sucking Demon
he preyed on the vulnerable
by giving them something to believe in.

With the incessant rhymes in her head
the Damsel turned to the Demon for relief
tolerating and even aiding
the damned souls he heartlessly reaped.

But in a moment of profound strength
Daphne had a change of heart
she felt the fire in her own soul,
all it took was one spark.

From that day began a journey
where her codependence would be unlearned
finding a power within herself
Daphne would be the Damsel no more.

Little Nightling That Dwells

I know you
like the back of my hand
dwelling in the dark
like roots under land.

Creature of the night
you are so in love
because the darkness was with you
when no one else was.

I know you
little nightling that dwells
on the pain and trauma
you know oh so well.

You love the dark
but does the dark love you?
When branches grow from roots
you become living proof.

Pain without art
is like a seed in the dark
but pain with a purpose
grows above the earth’s surface
reaching for the sun
when it’s all said and done.
You are more than your roots
you are what thrives above too.

Dear Darkling by Valerie Parente

You are the symbol of pain becoming beauty
featherless wings
hope withstanding mood swings
sprouting from a spine
where stance is a nuisance
so you arch your back
like the moon and its exuberance
and though you come from the aether
your experience is human;
so fear not, dear darkling
you have become the blueprint
of finding beauty in darkness
now the teacher, once the student.

As above, you knew your worth
so below, you went and proved it.

Succubus

Milky eyes rolled
in the back of her head
they accuse the succubus
of stealing dreams from the men.

She’s only as good
as when they want to be around her
as if her morality
is tied to their arousal.

He can touch her
but she can’t touch him
just like she can lose her value
but he can only win.

Her pleasure, her lust,
a malevolence in itself
while he’s in high heaven
she’s going straight to hell.

They call her a succubus
because she likes to be exposed
that’s why they justify
putting a knife to her throat.

But they don’t know
she’ll stroke the knife with her tongue
because she taught herself
to like the taste of blood.
