Incantations

Incantations by Valerie Parente

Where there is language, there is a pulse
and my pain is copyrighted on my tongue
maybe that’s why I’ve learned to love
the distinct taste of my own blood.

We made symbols for what we were hearing
we strung those symbols together to create meaning
we morphed meanings with rhyme and reason
until we made something to believe in.

They’re called spells for witches
they’re religion for linguistics
for poets, something mystic
God only knows the difference.

We speak these conditions
carefully into existence
the universe’s heuristics
have no concept of distance.

The rhymes and their placement
passed down generations
the craft of narration
in all its incantations.

Weak men call it a dark art
when women have wisdom to impart
from the larynx it departs
to the rhythm of their heart.

It’s a craft, nonetheless
but there’s nothing nefarious
it’s when we use our dialect
that it’s the ultimate catharsis.

Wish Upon A Star…

Wish Upon A Star… by Valerie Parente

When children wish upon a star
do you think their little brains know
that the star might have died
a long time ago?

The naivety of our past
influences our hopes today
yet that light still reaches us
even after that star goes away.

Somewhere down the line
that star turned to dust
but look at you now,
out of that dust you grew up.

So why shouldn’t we believe
a wish on a star can come true
when we ourselves are manifestations
of the fire they once bloomed.

Death is just a word
what was once life goes on
in the little ripples and effects
of a light so strong from beyond.

Those children had it right
to wish upon the stars.
Energy never dies
it just moves along.

The Timing of The Stars

The Timing of The Stars by Valerie Parente

The light from a star has been conspiring
to make its way to you in due time;
traveling through the cosmos
to reach your eyes.

The constellations give you exactly what you need
at the perfectly right time;
whether you are ready or not
is just a state of mind.

Looking back on the past
everything always makes sense
so why not put your faith
in the future past, called present?
